Ben: In the desert of info, your reports are an oasis - or more properly a continuing series of them.

Thanks to you we have considerable knowledge of how the 1xEV process is proceeding in the GPP2.

What is curious is how little we know about WCDMA or its politically correct name (note that CDMA is omitted completely in its label) UMTS.

One of the most fascinating bits of stray info I recall is that the Koreans have referred to the "WCDMA" they are working on as "backwardly compatible to CDMA One". Did I misunderstand that? Could that possibly be so?

Again it is very interesting to me that WCDMA seems to have various Asian versions as well as the "UMTS" European version.

What we do not know is what "WCDMA" will actually be in the real world. What will be its specs and how much will it be "converged" toward CDMA 2000 3x?

We do know the DoCoMo version is an old old version (1999) as a base and then has "modifications" to boot. To call this WCDMA is stretching the nomenclature and to pretend any real relationship of that hybrid to UMTS is a joke at best, FUD at root.

I for one look forward to watching the "evolution" of WCDMA in various countries and regions.

What we don't know about what it will eventually be in actuality as it evolves is massively greater than what we do.

Meanwhile in the real world the 1x 1xEVDO and 1xEVDV process is where the test of 3G will take place over the next year or two. DoCoMo and the Isle of Man geographically limited and technologically non state of the art "tests" are all we will have for comparison.

Will be fun to watch.

And the most fun will be in Japan - and later in Australia, the US and Latin America where 1xEV should be operational alongside (and often prior to) "WCDMA" of whatever mutation.

Suggest primary attention be given the current spectrum - where 1xEV should star as opposed to "new" spectrum - where "WCDMA" will make its debut.

Best.

Chaz
