In a shocking partisan, racist action, Senate
Republicans marched in lock step to defeat the
nomination of Judge White to be a federal
district judge from Missouri. It is bad enough
that Senate Republicans have blocked many of
President Clinton’s progressive judicial
nominations for over a year. When the
administration finally agreed to go along with a
conservative nominee favored by Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, the UAW expected
that this logjam had at last been broken. But in a cynical double-cross, arch
conservative GOP Sen. Ashcroft of Missouri decided to launch a campaign against
the nomination of Judge White, alleging that he was soft on the death penalty.
This was total nonsense, since White’s record as a judge on Missouri’s Supreme
Court showed that he had voted to uphold the death penalty in 70 percent of the
cases before him.





Ashcroft’s spurious allegations represented an effort to play the race card to aid
his close campaign for re-election. Even though Judge White had previously been
approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee with bipartisan support, Ashcroft
was able to unite all Republicans against the nomination when it came to the
Senate floor. This represented the first time in 12 years that a judicial
nomination had been rejected by the Senate. It was a racist slap at Judge White
and African Americans generally. This disgraceful episode has outraged African
Americans in Missouri and across the country. The fact that the entire GOP
Senate caucus supported Ashcroft’s racist attack on the Judge White nomination
has vividly underscored the insensitivity of the Republican party to minorities in
this country.
