Power outage in Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park happened again last night. Total losses amounted to NT$500mn. According to the fabs located in that region, we estimated the loss to major chipmakers in Taiwan would be: UMC (2303): NT$150mn to NT$250mn, Macronix (2337): NT$50mn, Winbond (2344): under NT$50mn, ProMOS (5387): under NT$50mn, Powerchip (5346): under NT$50mn, TSMC (2330): under NT$50mn.

The blackout was triggered by a mechanical problem at Macronix and caused a fire at United Microelectronics.

The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes, the Commercial Times said.

Taiwan Hot Stock: United Micro Up Ahead Of Firm's Buyback
TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--At 0149 GMT Tuesday (8:49 p.m. EST Monday), shares in United Microelectronics Corp. (2303.TW) were rising NT$0.60 to NT$45.30 (US$1=NT$33.191) on volume of 49 million shares, as investors were buying ahead of the company's buyback plan, which begins Wednesday. Friday UMC's board approved a buy-back plan for 400 million shares between Dec. 27 and Feb. 26.

Taiwan Macronix Intl Expects FY Rev To Almost Double-CEO

TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--Macronix International Co. (MXICY) expects its revenue to almost double to NT$32.1 billion (US$1=NT$33.187) this year, said Miin Wu, chief executive officer said in a recent telephone interview.

Macronix, Taiwan's fourth largest producer of semi-conductor chips, posted revenue of NT$16.93 billion last year.

Wu said one reason for the company's robust sales growth is that it specializes in producing so-called flash memory chips, which are in strong demand
