Skeeter,
<< ....a value system that says destroying the world is better than not achieving my self interest. >>
I don't really think there's any significant number of people who have such a value system, and those that do are likely institutionalized. And even at that, I view this as a misguided attempt at quite the opposite.
<< ....people base decisions on perception and not reality. >>
I wouldn't know reality if it hit me in the face. The only way I have to apprehend "out there" is faulty, but it doesn't have an "idiot light" to let me know.
<< ...such a wrong headed value system will threaten humanity in time... >>
Point well taken, in that I'd be well-advised to question whether I'm "wrong headed." Still, that value system is not really wrong headed, IMHO. It is. And there's nothing fundamentally different about it. Just part of the process, as is the perception/misperception we create about same. Doubtless some would or will call my value system wrong headed, and yours as well.
Besides, if I had a nickel for every time somebody said or thought that throughout the eons, I wouldn't have to trade stocks! I bet they were saying that when some stone-age parents disapprovingly saw their "wayward" offspring getting obsessed with bronze! Yet, who'd a thunk it?
