Art, that was very well stated (and it concurs with my thinking as well). Maybe you should include amateur oil patch economist in your profile.

All of the conspiracy theory about Bush and Cheney that is being floated around neglects the basic economic principles of if you over regulate and tax something you get less of it.

Electricity shortages in some areas of the country are as much the result of "not in my backyard" thinking as to environmental factors. California is only beginning to see the result of artificial price controls that have been applied to their electricity suppliers. (It definitely reminds me of the Libertarian's cliche, "If the government sets out to help you, you will be the first one hurt."

I find it amazing that we have not seen more of an economic impact from the increase in energy costs. Natural gas is used far more widely than just fuel for heating and power generation.

We have some challenges in front of us and the lack of leadership on the tough issues from the last 8 years will not make the next 4 or 8 easy sailing even with a cooperative congress for the new one.
