China Unicom Co. may acquire 19 GSM networks in '01
(22 December 2000) Yang Xianzu, chairman of China Unicom Co. recently disclosed in Hong Kong that the global system for mobile communications (GSM) mobile telephone networks possessed by its parent company China Unicom will possibly be incorporated into the publicly traded company in the second half of next year.
Currently, China Unicom, which is listed in Hong Kong and the United States, owns the cellphone networks of 12 provinces and municipalities, including Liaoning, Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Hubei, Fujian and Guangdong, according to the Dec. 22 Jisuanji Shijie Ribao (China Computer World).
However, the networks in 19 provinces and municipalities—including those in northeast China, Shaanxi, Hunan and Sichuan—possessed by the parent company still have not been infused into the publicly traded company.
According to analysts, it is hard to determine the impact of the new move on China Unicom Co., but it should be positive, the article said.
Regarding the code division multiple access (CDMA) project developed by the parent company, the development scale, time and investment are still unknown.
