Ji'nan Mobile drops cellphone prices; others follow suit

(22 December 2000) Ji’nan Mobile Communications has crossed antennae with the likes of heavyweight cellphone makers Motorola Inc. and Ericsson by starting a price war, pushing domestic makers’ buttons, too.

Eight Ji’nan Mobile Communications cellphone models sell at cut-rate prices; some have been reduced by as much as renminbi 600 (US$72.50), reports the Dec. 14 Qilu Wanbao (Qilu Evening News).

Not to be outdone, the Motorola LF2000, for example, now sells for Rmb 1,880 (US$227.10), a markdown of Rmb 1,260 (US$152.20). The Ericsson GM518 sells for a mere Rmb 188 (US$22.70).

These prices often include such extras as waived global access fees and a free subscriber identity module (SIM) card—a smart card that carries data about the subscriber, the story said.

Ji’nan Unicom responded quickly to Ji’nan Mobile’s price slashing; an official alleges that Ji’nan Mobile and its cellphone suppliers have violated telecommunications laws and regulations, the article said.

The Ji’nan Unicom official claims that his company has reported these allegations to provincial authorities demanding that the sales promotion be stopped. The official added that his company will come up with even more aggressive price cuts to compete—if necessary, the story said.
