With the delays in Ultasparc III, and Sun's atrocious reliability problems with the L2 cache on UltraSparc II, it would be tempting to predict Sun's demise. However Sun has always managed to pull out a surprise and save its bacon.

In the 80's Sun was dependent on the Motorola 68000 32bit family, while cheaper workstations were based on Intel's 16 bit family. When 32 bit 80386 came out, I expected major problems for Sun, since the Motorola processor was out-muscled. However Sun temporarily embraced the 386, but also bet on the new RISC technology. The RISC tactic worked but required a tricky re-compilation of all the Sun software. The RISC gave the Sun workstation the performance edge to justify its high price tag.

The Pentium family erased the performance gap, and a huge number of workstation users ended up on Intel platforms. Sun hedged its bets again by porting a crippled version of Solaris on Pentium, but anyway had moved on to the highly lucrative server market.

The Xeon has made major inroads into the server space now. However Sun leveraged its Java hype to improve its Server revenues, by selling enterprise solutions.

Again Sun appears to be in trouble. Will McNeely pull out another rabit from his hat ?

Time alone will tell.
