I don't recall the title. It was the mid or late 80s and he had just written it. I'll keep the War of the End of the World in mind, thanks.

I always thought Vargas Llosa was more a libertarian than a conservative.

So many of these guys' writings are suffused with politics. From a literary point of view, I find it a little off putting, but it's understandable. There is poverty and injustice all around them, it must be hard to separate out art from political tract. I think the art suffers, though. Neruda's poetry was second rate when he was a militant communist.

I have no idea how the guy writes, but I hear Subcomandante Marcos, the leader of the Zapatista rebels in Chiapas, has developed quite a following in Latin America and Europe. Critics have been following his letters to the Mexico City newspapers since 1994 and consider him to be one of the best writers in Mexico. I get the niggling feeling these critics are motivated by politics rather than love of literature.
