Hi Andrew,
Most companies split their stock when in their eyes the price passes a set point. That set point is determined by mainly the maturity of the company with the more mature ones splitting above $100 recently ( re INTC, MSFT, IBM). The last time NT split was in 1987 when the stock was around $40 usd, these days the split number that is in vogue sems to be around $100.
I noticed fron your bio that you are also a fan of The Sage from Omaha, Warren Buffet. It is strange that I have implemented financial arrangements that mimic his all on my own. I have read his bio and his major decision was to buy an insurance company which provided a constant steady stream of cash to invest in quality companies.
