i'm against it. yes, you're right, it CAN be done in a responsible manner, and most firms are bitten by the speculation bug and that is what screws it up most of the time. but i still think that the risk decision should be taken by investors. if i have a view on a commodity, i want to trade the proxy stocks unencumbered. as has been seen in the gold stocks, hedging hasn't helped the shareholders one bit on the way down. but it sure will be a drag on the way up, also a proven fact already in view of the ASL and Cambior near bankruptcies in last year's price spike. and that wasn't even a sustained rally.
