Pete, McRobert has been a great source of info for years. I have read a lot of his stuff on the Hardgainer web site and in the quarterly, Milo.
I pretty much use 5-6 reps for workouts, but I do max singles when I try the 1-6 method or drop sets. I usually move to one of those techniques when I reach a sticking point on the 5-6 reps groove. And it allows me to check out my single rep max once in a while.
I also agree that dips are a wonderful exercise, but I don't have the equipment at home. I do them when I'm on the road and the hotel has a gym with parallel bars and I remember to bring my dumbbell sling.
I think incline presses are overrated vs. one handed side presses with an olympic bar, as they work the upper pecs and shoulders much better than the inclines.
I do like the narrow grip bench press for handling maximum poundages on my shoulders and triceps.
20 Rep squats have never worked for me, except as a substitute for cardio work, where it is amazing. I think the problem is, I have never had a problem gaining mass, and the 20 Rep squat programs are for people who do. They sort of change your body's mindset, assuming you don't have to interrupt them for frequent knee surgeries. <g> Like Pavel Tsatsouline, I have found the heavy deadlift in its many forms a better builder of my leg muscles. |
