IRVINE, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- In sync with the woes afflicting other computer makers, EMachines said Wednesday that weakening consumer demand amid a tough retail environment would result in a greater fourth-quarter loss than expected.

EMachines (EEEE: news, chart), a company that lowered the bar on PC prices, said it expects a loss ranging from 19 cents to 23 cents for the quarter, before amortization and non-cash charges related to stock compensation.

Analysts polled by First Call expected a loss of 4 cents in the fourth quarter.

Sales are expected to come in lower as well, to between $120 million and $130 million.

The quarter will be hurt by promotional discounts and rebates incentives, on top of the normal mail-in rebates. The loss for the last quarter also includes inventory charges.

EMachines said it sees softness in revenue through the first half of 2001.

Shares of EMachines were down 15 percent to 34 cents.
