(1) Beijing Cable Television Station Builds High-tech Network

[CND, 04/24/97] Beijing Cable Television Station (BCTV) is building an
optic-fibre network. The network, costing more than US$100 million, will
be one of the most advanced in China and similar to those in the West and
Japan, South China Morning Post reported. The number of subscribers to
cable television nationwide reached 45 million at the end of July 1996 and
is expected to reach 80 million by 2000. BCTV alone has reached 1.8
million households in Beijing. (Jian-Min LI, Guochen WAN)
