Well, the above statement is kind of an urban myth. G* has recorded quite a lot of incoming cash (nearly 70M$ as of 12/31/99, and more since then) for Gateways and UTs. Of course, it's spent more than that and carries a lot of both GWs and UTs on its balance sheet...but that's largely explainable by the fact that it financed 38 GWs and only 25 or so have been deployed, and by the fact that damn few UTs have been sold.

On a related point, when considering the various disaster scenarios for G*/Loral, it bears repeating that key territories are effectively controlled by G* and/or Loral, including Brazil, Mexico, Canada and Russia. Even if one accepts the premise (which I do not) that Vod and France Telecom are bad partners, there are lots of countries left where the SP is either controlled by G* management, or doesn't exist at all.
