John, <<<The WSJ's "Marketplace" section this morning has six separate articles trashing technology. Including Mossberg's Personal Technology column titled "Slump in Tech Sales Signals a Transition To a Post-PC World".....
Could they be more short sighted?>>>
Walter Mosberg and a lot of the other PC "guru's" and for the most part many of your stock analysts discovered the PC in the early and mid 80's. They were the first to recognize what a great thing the PC was - even then.
But, for a lot of us on this thread (Saturn V, Joseph Pareti, Tony Viola, John Koligman, Jules Garfunkel, Fred Fahmy, GVTucker, and a lot of others), we were already familiar with computers (real computers) in the early 80's.
For the most part, we thought the PC, at that time, was a toy used to play games with and not really about to do any real work. When the Intel 386 came out in the early 1990', most of us started to change our minds. Most of us who had experience with real computers started to take the PC seriously and probably about then, we all had PC's at home and in the work place.
For Walter Mossberg and the rest of the "PC guru's" - for them, it is about the latest fashion. The latest cool gadget. The guy who is ahead of the curve. They saw the trend coming.
They were right in that the computer industry adopted the PC and the PC became an important part of the computer industry.
Guys like Walter Mossberg made a great living writing about the virtues of the Apple MacIntosh and how cool it was to hook up a modem to a PC.
Unfortunately, most of these guys don't have a real understanding of the computer industry. They confuse the consumer PC industry with the computer industry.
The PC is only a front end interface into the computer and at best it is about 20% of the computer industry.
And, when people talk about technology - what are they talking about? When they talk about technology, they seem to be talking about something other than the microprocessor - but if you were to ask them to tell you what they mean't if it wasn't the microprocessor - I guarantee they wouldn't be able to tell you.
I don't expect this confusion to clear up anytime soon, but when it does - it will be when we get into another up cycle. Unfortunately, this could take quite some time to clear up.
