Horsham, Pennsylvania, Dec. 28 (Bloomberg) -- VerticalNet Inc.
shares rose 17 percent on speculation PurchasePro.com Inc. would
buy a stake in the manager of Web sites through which businesses
can buy and sell products, an analyst said.

VerticalNet shares, which have fallen 92 percent this year, rose 97
cents to $6.63 today. The shares have surged 46 percent in the last
four trading days.

Analyst Thomas Neuhaus at BB&T Capital Markets said VerticalNet's
investor-relations department told him PurchasePro.com isn't buying a
stake in VerticalNet. PurchasePro.com also runs sites for exchanging
products on the Internet, including a Web exchange for Hilton Hotels
Corp. Neuhaus rates VerticalNet ''hold.''

PurchasePro.com spokesman Matthew Brimhall said the speculation
was ''unfounded.'' Horsham, Pennsylvania-based VerticalNet wasn't
immediately available to comment.
