John,
re > I view it from the perspective of opposing tribes of barely sentient monkeys,
each of which are fighting over territorial expansion and precious, and limited, natural
resources.<

I have long contended that we owe our large brains to the endless wars of which that scene in 2001 was the first chapter.

re >because there's
nowhere left to grow and expand.<

Actually there is lots of room left both on and off the planet. Mars has more land area than Earth does, admittedly not very fertile or warm but expansive none the less, and certainly has water if only at the poles. The Moon is also quite empty and probably has water too. And we have yet to even dent the part of Earth that is covered in water. But Humans are quite lazy and would often rather take from someone else to avoid actually working so your point >We finally must turn and face down all those demons
and imps of War and mayhem. Ourselves. And this just might be the biggest War of all.< is still well taken.
