The most egregious example of this conflict of interest, of course, is the Salomon Smith Barney telecom analyst Jack Grubman, who was "pounding the table" for most of 2000 to buy T and WCOM while he pocketed millions advising them during their various mergers, acquisitions, spinoffs, etc.
Needless to say, anyone who was foolish enough to listen to him lost a substantial amount of money.

I hope there is a special place in hell for analysts of this ilk.
