Vodafone is dismissing reports that it could face US compensation claims running into billions of dollars from brain tumour victims.

Lawsuits are reportedly set to be launched by March against mobile phone manufacturers, network providers and "land-line" companies, examining concerns that radiation from mobiles causes cancer.

The lawsuits are being brought by lawyer Peter Angelos who helped to win £3 billion in damages from the tobacco industry.

A spokesman said: "We have not received writs or legal action as far as I know anywhere in the world on these issues. There is no way we can stop him bringing cases if he wants to, but they will be vigorously defended."

He pointed to the official Stewart report into the issue earlier this year, which he said suggested there was no evidence that mobile phone technology harmed people's health.

"But it is one of those subjects that you can never disprove," he said.

Well, that's not true. It can be proven that harm is below a certain level, which is the same thing, if the level is low enough.
