The description sounds similar to Cisco. Has anyone done an analysis of ongoing operations? I know a few have taken Cisco's numbers apart and found they've hidden a lot behind good-will and options recognition. Mucho Maas is the one who understands this and perhaps could comment on NT as well.

I do believe if acquisitions are strategic, made to bolster real needs within the company, they're wise and have to be done. If they're made just to play a numbers game, the whole thing will backfire. Prime example of the latter is Terayon. I believe NT is the former and I agree Roth has done a good job turning the company from voice to data. His focus on fiber optics shows unusual foresight. Alcatel beat NT (in submarine) but Roth certainly made up for lost time by targetting terrestrial in time to capture a large piece of the market. Lucent, on the other hand, has been developing fiber optic systems probably as along as anyone and simply focused on the wrong market. Oops, indeed. Incidentally, I don't know how a company the size of Lucent can miss a market. Do they not talk to their customers? Do they simply build products and solutions and try to ram them down the customers' throats? If so, they deserve the shame they're now experiencing.

Roth appears to be an extremely competent leader and I certainly wouldn't bet against him.
