re: Upgrading older G* phones to support data.

I just upgraded my G* phone to support data. It was free and, in this instance, fairly painless.

G*USA FedEXed a new phone to me. As instructed, I swapped the little card located at the bottom left of the phone front; transferred my battery pack; verified that the new phone worked; packaged the old phone, applying G*USA's prepaid FedEX label and arranged with FedEX to have it picked up. The only pain was re-entering the numbers into the phone book; for me, that was just one number.

For someone who does not want to personally re-enter numbers into the phone book, or who has cellular service for that phone, it might be easier to ship the old 'defective' phone to G*USA. They'll take care of transferring the information to a new phone and ship it to you. Of, course you'd be without your phone for a few days.

FWIW.
