Here's a list of 51 NYSE stocks chosen by Jeff Hirsch, publisher of the Stock Traders Almanac, for a January effect:

cbs.marketwatch.com

The strategy of buying stocks now and selling by Feb. 15 has outperformed the New York Stock Exchange composite by an average 6.9 percent since 1975. Last year's crop of 26 stocks was up an average 8.9 percent, a 14.3 percent advantage over the NYSE composite's 5.4 percent decline.

Hirsch altered the bargain stocks tradition slightly in 1999, when he said he noticed tax-loss selling continued late into the year. He moved the start date from Dec. 15 to late December and kept screening out preferred stocks, closed-end funds, splits, new issues and REITs to produce a list.
