Steve, the SDMC is fully compatible with any appliance designed for the MMC. Thus, an MP3 player using MMC can also use SDMC, and the user may have to upgrade in order to be able to download music from certain sites. I don't know if any MP3 players currently are being supplied with SDMC. Same goes for any cell phone or hand held computer designed for MMC.

Though I am sure many more technically adept people on this thread can explain how SDMC works, it is my understanding that the card has certain identifying characteristics of the user embedded in it (e.g., a credit card number) so that the credit card can be automatically charged when the user downloads music. If the user then desires to make a copy of the download, the card looks for similar identifying codes on the new copy. If it doesn't find those codes, then it won't allow the file to be copied in those instances where the file is copy protected. Or it may permit a certain number of copies to be made, allowing the user to transfer the file to a computer or other storage device.

Remember, the association of publishers, appliance manufacturers and chip makers involved in the development of SDMC agreed to a standard, and that standard is now being implemented. So it's not as if there is no accepted way of handling these issues.
