Agreed, your last sentence sums it up. Much patience is called for. While we wait for milestones, partners and ultimately the product, you can entertain yourself by catching up on the fascinating science. Sample: A fairly recent discovery found that certain "Gram-negative" bacteria know when foreign substances, like an antibiotic, invade them. These resistant bugs "spit" out the antibiotic through the cell structure - termed an "efflux pump". This is just one mechanism by which the bacteria become resistant. Microcide and Daiichi are working on inhibitors to nail this molecular pump, ensuring sufficient quantities of the drug accumulate inside the organism. Their focus is on restoring quinolones (Daiichi's "franchise") against resistance from the pseudomona strain and other Gram-negatives.

To get some idea of the $ magnitude of antibiotics I collected this from various sources: "Sepracor (they have a patent on a safer quinolone) estimates that the U.S. market for quinolones was approximately $800 million in 1995 while sales of all antibiotics in the U.S. totaled approximately $6.6 billion in 1995". "In terms of product types, the antibiotics market is dominated by Cephalosporins, valued at US$1482 million in 1994/5, followed by broad-spectrum penicillins with revenues of US$1085 million and the macrolides sector estimated to have been worth US$811 million". A lot at stake here ?.

With reference to the claim, I intrepreted this as meaning that Microcide together with it's partners Daiichi, J&J and Pfizer collectively have the largest <collaborative ?> research effort in the world. I could be wrong. I think it was intended to highlight Microcide as part of a highly respected team.

Dave.
