JDN:

I build computers all the time. At this point all I ever even THINK ABOUT using is the AMD Thunderbird, usually in an ASUS A7V motherboard with 384M of PC133 memory. Pretty soon even faster double-data-rate DRAM memory will become common and I'll start using Asus motherboards that support that (with a new VIA chipset) instead. Intel processors never even CROSS MY MIND unless I need to build a 2-processor system for video editing.

If you're in the market for a new computer, that's what you ought to get. You can't beat a 1Ghz Thunderbird. It goes like a bat out of hell, and it's dirt cheap.
