I think the post means that they PURCHASED (went long) the same number of shares that they previously SOLD (went short). In that way you 'cover' your position. Zeroed it out, so to speak.

But Kevin, this is just MY reading of the post.

There may be other meanings (puts or calls) to 'cover' vs being 'naked', thereby limiting your exposure.
