Yes they are in competition but Hummingbird is a much broader SW company. I'll break the company down into the SW areas that it offers.

HUMC began selling X-windows SW for MS Windows. This allows you to run UNIX apps under windows. They are the clear market leader in this area and they are the leader in TCP/IP & NFS SW. They bought terminal emulation SW. These businesses are growing slowly but are very profitable. It has nothing to do with EIPs and Viador.

The high growth area for HUMC was built through a series of acquisitions followed by a few years of internal development. They have high quality BI tools (like COGN, BOBJ). They have to notch document managment products (through the acquisition of PC Docs) and search engine/indexing tools (through the acquisition of Fulcrum).

Using technology from these products, HUMC built a first rate EIP product. They offer the above tools as fully integrated options to the Portal product. 3rd party products can also be integrated.

Viador provides a EIP shell which can be used to build a complete Portal. 3rd party products must also be integrated to finish the job.

I beleive HUMC will dominate the EIP SW area, but VIAD is more of a pure play. SQSW is also a pure play. I expect that a major BI vendor will likely buy out both VIAD & SQSW given their current low valuations.

Are you invested in EIP or BI companies?
