Frank,
As an addendum to your last post, there was a time when internal networks were not plug and play either. But it is a hell of a lot easier upgrading the infrastructure in a building than it is to dig up a street.

On another note, Pacbell finally provides DSL service to my home. I got it installed today. I put the guy through a battery of questions...of course. It appears that they pulled fiber to the cabinet and installed the DSLAM right around the corner.....WoooHooo! Cooking with gas at 768Kbps.

As part of Pacbell's offering, I got free DirectTV installation and a discount on the equipment. As I mentioned in a message the other day, I have never been satisfied with the quality or reliability of my cable service. I ditched the cable and now have satellite. Pacbell's little tactical offensive against the encroachment of cable into their territory worked in my case.
