Of all Gilder's horses, only ADI, CIEN, AMCC and GLW were green YTD. Nine were off 80% or more.

That would be a concern if the purpose of the GTR was to pick stocks that go up in a given year, but it isn't. Rather difficult for ANY tech stocks to be up a year when the Naz is off 39%.

The purpose of the GTR is to identify companies with revolutionary technologies early in the game; companies with the POTENTIAL to achieve great success in their particular field. There are a dozen other factors that can screw it up; crappy management/execution (eg. LU) is probably at the top of the list. Lousy macro economic conditions don't help either.

GG understood CDMA and its significance back in Jan '97 when most others thought it was a scam. Is QCOM one of those crap picks you speak of because it was down this year?
