JDN - The 386 was faster than the 286 even when there was only 286 software. The Pentium was faster than the 486 even when there was only 486 software to run. Likewise the P6 - "PentiumPro"...

But now we have PIV - which is actually P7, don't ask me why Intel called their refresh of the P6 "PIII" - which seems to be slower than the previous generation unless people use "special magic". It is quite possible that only a few folks - the OS and database people - will ever make that effort.

Then we have Itanium, which is way slower than anything since the Pentium, and needs programs which are completely re-designed to get even acceptable performance. But the architecture is scheduled to be replaced by McKinley in a year, and McKinley has a completely different memory and I/O architecture, along with programming "enhancements". Who would waste time writing for a processor which will see only limited time in the market before being replaced by another processor with different characteristics?

You were the guy who wanted to buy a RAMBUS system too... did you ever do that? If so, do you feel shafted? I would suggest the PIV will be a similar deal.
