A year ago today people from all around the world were holding their breaths and praying as they awaited the first strike of midnight somewhere in the South Pacific. It was feared that a little Bug known as Y2K would bring about economic Armageddon to all corners of the globe. Planes were expected to drop from the air, hospital equipment would administer wrong medications, banking records would be wiped out, Government pensions would be miscalculated and your Mr. Coffee machine would brew 100 years later.

As the clock struck midnight, we all sat waiting with swatter in hand but the Bug never came. Humanity once again was saved, our economies would continue to flourish and my coffee was brewed on time. At least, so we thought!!

On the Eve of the year 2001, I think back to the trillions of dollars spent, wasted on an insignificant little flea that never even materialized. While I look back at the events of the past year, I can't help but think that while our efforts were concentrated on exterminating that little bug, we overlooked the Big Rat which returned from the Middle Ages and once again scourged our world with the Black Plague.

Happy New Year to you too Mr. Greenspan.
