Neocon,

I hear you on the crowd thing. Strange how we can change. In any event I have leaned towards the home with friends thing myself in the past couple of years.

Crowe did a great job fleshing out his character. I was glad that "Gladiator" didn't slip into the "Die Hard/Rambo" mode. I get bored so fast with that.

Joachim is interesting. Strange face. Who knows if he or River would have been the better actor. I would bet on Joachim. I thought he was good in "8mm". I had high hopes for "8mm" as it was written by the guy who wrote "Seven". Of course "8mm" was pretty poor and I never gave it much thought as there was not too much to think about. "Seven" on the other hand is an outstanding film. I have much respect and interest in David Fincher. We will have to talk about his films sometime soon. I am very interested in what you think about them. Fincher has to work very hard to keep his progression alive and of high quality. In "Seven" I loved how Spacey and Freeman were the same guy dealing with the world in different ways. Outstanding. "To Die For" was great black comedy. Can we still say black comedy? What should we say now? Dark comedy? I got the impression that Kelly Preston stole some ideas from Kidman's performance for her role in "Jerry McGuire". Just seemed like the same kind of woman.

Of course "Mean Streets" is about this struggle with Charlie. I just had trouble buying into the premise that this savvy kid didn't think it to the end. That is why I think its his love for Johnny Boy and not any real promise of redemption through Johnny Boy's salvation that moves him to act. He knows Johnny is doomed. Keep in mind this is a very small thing I didn't like in an otherwise outstanding film. This film just moves. Who is good and who is bad is very gray in this film...just like in life?

One last thing, Charlie made a choice. If it was his father maybe no choice, but its his uncle. Charlie could do something else, but he likes it. For as much of a "nice guy" as he may appear, he wants the life. I think you are really going to love "The Sopranos". You have got to check it out.

Oh the crazy uncle thing. Everyone has one (or maybe two), but mine are just pretending to be crazy. I think it is an unwritten somewhere that every family needs the crazy uncle. It sounds as if your uncles really are over the edge wild. All I can say is that is nice to visit and dinner conversation is never dull.
