There are many companies going head-to-head with EMC.

Hitachi is one. Yes, HIT. Who would've thought?

In August I replaced EMC RAID devices with Hitachi Freedom
storage (the HIT 7000E model) at a major bank; a total of 5 terabytes.
The devices are hanging off of two SUNW UE 10000s domains.
I also replaced the EMC hanging off of a UE 6000 at the same bank.
Looking at iostat(s) and vxstat(s) taken from "before and after" the change,
the Hitachi(s) has faster service times than the EMC(s).

(Of course I was comparing their "old" EMC devices with the
"new" Hitachi(s). True ... it's not like I'm comparing the best
of HIT vs. the best of EMC.)

There are three other Fortune 100 companies doing the same here in my area,
going with Hitachi. At least that's what they were doing in August-September.

This bank (one of the nation's top 5) is going with Hitachi
for all their storage. Now I've been asked to "test out" a HIT 9000E for them.

Am I saying buy HIT and sell EMC? no. Nor am I saying buy EMC.

EMC makes quality storage devices. However this is a fiercely
competitive sector. It is not owned by EMC.

The storage market is huge; I agree it's growing rapidly.
(I don't own any storage related stocks though.)
But I don't think there are niches for each. A dominant
player will emerge.

Storage devices
will become "commoditized", too. And margins will shrink.
