Ron,

Sorry. Get carried away sometimes, ya' know...........
<< All I was trying to state is that good and evil as they relate to mankind are physical representations of man's will, not something to be explained by supernatural forces. >>
That's all Conrad was trying to say also, IMHO.
I think you slightly miss Conrad's point. He was not implying that man is somehow uniquely capable of evil and other beings such as animals are not. He was not speaking to that at all. The point of "man alone...." is that you needn't invoke some extraterrestrial or supernatural or 5th-dimensional force or being as a cause. Further, it was meant tongue in cheek.
No argument here with the rest of your post. Still, I make a distinction between subjective events which I may assign objectivity to (such as beliefs, ostensibly external sources of influence, etc.) and objective reality itself, which subjective beings have no direct way to apprehend, and so must of necessity speculate about, and create beliefs and so forth.
Partly because of this, I remain unconvinced that good and evil are anything other than assignations, value judgements imposed by subjective beings. I suppose that is why I generally don't tend to view the glass as half full, or half empty, but rather half occupied. YMMV, of course.
JMVHO, as always...............
