I think you are way ahead of the game.

You posted...

For instance, there is no technical reason why a picture bit map cannot
be transferred to flash via a DRAM buffer. That should free the camera immediately.
I don't know if that would be part of the camera or the flash card.


We talked a little bit about this very fact and you are correct
in your assumptions. The functionality is part of the camera,
I believe. Write speed may be a moot issue if the digital camera
manufacturers continue to improve on their designs and the cost
of DRAM does not add significantly to final product cost.
