Marconi Strengthens Optical Portfolio for Asia-Pacifc Market

Metro DWDM, New Long Haul Transport and Complete Management Platform

Date Posted: 18/12/2000

Marconi(LONDON and Nasdaq: MONI), a global supplier of advanced communications, today announced three new products that round out its optical networking portfolio for Asia Pacific providers. Already the largest optical networking equipment provider in Europe and fourth largest worldwide, according to Dataquest's January 2000 report, Marconi is leveraging its experience and technology strength as it targets the Asia Pacific market.

"We're using our experience as the industry leader in Europe SDH networks to rapidly expand our optical portfolio for Asia Pacific," said Dave Lewis, executive vice president and general manager, Optical Networks and Network Management, Marconi. "We are providing Asia Pacific service providers with the products, support and network expertise necessary to be successful in today's competitive environment."

The new products introduced today include the SmartPhotoniX PLT(TM)80 solution for long haul transport, the SmartPhotoniX PMM(TM) solution for metropolitan DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing), and ServiceOn(TM) OverView 3000 management system for next-generation optical networks.

The PLT80 and PMM are both well suited to the dynamic, high-volume North American carrier market. By enabling remote addition of new services to the network, the PLT80 and PMM provide a flexible, manageable platform for end-to-end optical network architectures.

Carriers require rapid provisioning of services with accurate, verifiable Quality of Service data and the Marconi ServiceON OverView 3000 management platform is positioned to provide that for next generation SONET and DWDM networks end-to-end.

"Because all of our SmartPhotoniX products use common digital wrapper technology, they enable carriers to create one communications path from the metro access point to the backbone of the network," Lewis said. "This allows service providers to quickly add new services across different network segments and to manage quality of service end-to-end."
