Brian,
Thank you for the wonderful thread. I think I'll feel much better about this investment than most of my others in 2000.
I have taken the liberty of posting the site on my thread, (feeling sure that you won't mind at all).

I have a 17 year old who, as most teens are required to do nowadays, had to accumulate 100 community service hours for graduation. These were meaningless to him for the most part.
Then early in December, he and his friends heard about a family that was living in extreme poverty. They decided to organize a small fundraiser for the last day of exams; they got together their band and a couple of other school bands and asked a church for the use of a room. At the end of the evening they had raised over 600 dollars, and they felt great-- you could FEEL their pride and energy. I asked what the difference was between what they did and the school-required hours, and they said it felt direct and personal. They saw a need and they and their friends did something together which accomplished far more than they could have alone.
So much of our charitable giving is worthy, but faceless and general, small donations sent into the ether never to be heard from again. How much more rewarding to give to a cause that has not only the faces of children on it, but the faces of all our friends here at SI giving together to that specific cause and perhaps to eventually see the result!
