Well, many did not.. Those familiar with the sinking of the Sultana, a Mississippi river boat, know that many Andersonville prisoners were aboard that craft.

Overloaded with some 2,000 passengers, it went down taking 1,700 of them with her...., making it a greater disaster than the Titanic.
