I did not find the object of desire ugly. Although his reverie heightened her beauty… Yes. I agree here. This is an interesting phenomenon. It seems we can sometimes experience a vicarious attraction to someone on the basis of how they are viewed by others. The more we respect the person through whom we sense reverie, the more attractive the object of his desire becomes. Another phenomenon we’ve perhaps all experienced concerns the association of personality and physical traits. Have you ever encountered a person who initially seemed physically unattractive, but who, upon getting to know her became very attractive? The thing works in the opposite direction also. It could be that the filthy language and sluttish appearance of the girl in American Beauty so turned me off, that I associated the behaviour with her physical appearance.
