Re: Irwin Jacobs ... said earlier this year that his nightmare was that there might be a delay or problem with W-CDMA deployments.

I too worry about timely rollout of wCDMA. Aside from the technology and spectrum issues, what bothers me most is all the hype and unfulfilled promises its proponents have advanced for GPRS, EDGE AND wCDMA.

1. GPRS capability was exaggerated nearly to the point of fraud. In practice it will deliver so very little and will do so later than projected.

2. EDGE just does not seem to be a viable or even a credible story, yet many of the proponents cling to the fiction...desperately. I doubt it will ever be deployed to any significant degree. For me, the whole affair serves only to illuminate the depth of Q-envy they suffer.

3. wCDMA in Japan in May is looking like a lot less of an advance than originally touted, with data speeds in practice really no better than IS-95B. It may be 3G in name but not in performance. And May still seems questionable, since no one seems to have a proven wCDMA handset chip yet.

These folks go on shamelessly about Q hype even though only Q consistently delivers on performance promises and on product rollout schedules. The wCDMA crowd has yet to come close to delivering on their over hyped promises, and nothing in their history suggests that their rollout of wCDMA will be any different.

Actually, their best hope probably lies in the recent deal Q made with TI, and/or in QCTs stated schedule for development of wCDMA chips.

JMO,
