Russia Set to Maintain High Gold Production Levels

MOSCOW, Dec 31, 2000 -- (Agence France Presse) Russia is expected to maintain its current high level of gold output in 2001, Russian gold miners' union's president Valery Braiko said Saturday.

This year, Russia has produced some 146 tons of gold, a 14.8 percent rise compared to 125.87 tons in 1999.

Giving the existing capabilities of Russian companies, the gold output is likely to remain the same, unless the energy tariffs soar or the government "takes some rash steps", Braiko said as quoted by the Interfax news agency.

All Russian gold-producing regions had increased output, Braiko said.
