Kyocera To Release Mobile Phone With PDA Functions In U.S.

OSAKA (Nikkei)--Kyocera Corp. (6971) plans to release in the U.S. this month a mobile phone terminal with PDA (personal digital assistant) functions such as schedule management, company sources said.

The company aims to expand sales of mobile phones in North America, where PDAs are increasingly popular.

Kyocera Wireless Corp., Kyocera's U.S. subsidiary, will produce and market the device, which will work on an operating system developed by U.S. firm Palm Inc. and have a black-and-white display. It will be slightly larger than a regular cellular phone, weighing 208 grams and measuring 142mm x 66mm x 22mm.

The terminal can be used to send and receive e-mail, play games and download information such as schedules and address books from personal computers.

Kyocera, which is expected to recommend a retail price for the product of 500-550 dollars per unit, targets first-year sales of around 200,000 units.

The company plans to release by this autumn an updated version with faster data communications speed and a higher quality display, and will in the future release a model with a color screen. Apart from the U.S., the company will also consider entering the Canadian and Australian markets and selling the product to Asian communications companies.
