December Manufacturing Index Fell
To Near a 10-Year Low as Costs Rose
A WSJ.COM News Roundup

Manufacturing activity fell for the fifth month in a row in December to its lowest level in nearly a decade.

The National Association of Purchasing Management's business index, a broad gauge of the health of the manufacturing sector, fell to 43.7 from 47.7 in November. The latest reading was its lowest since the 42.9 recorded in April 1991. A figure above 50 signifies growth in manufacturing, while a figure below 50 means contraction.
