I wouldn't be surprised to see HD's earnings take a major hit this quarter. Its competitor Home Base is liquidating its inventory. I did some Christmas shopping at both Home Base and Home Depot and noticed that the business at Home Base was at least four times greater than at Home Depot. Home Base had a New Year's Day sale that brought in business at a time when Home Depot was closed. I see Home Base taking away some of Home Depot's future business as people stock up in anticipation of future needs. The recent storm might have increased Home Depot's sales for shovels, but overall, it might hurt Home Depot's sales since the weather might have forced HD to close some stores. Folks might also defer home improvement projects.
