Raymond Zinn. In 1978, Zinn founded chipmaker Micrel Inc. of San Jose, Calif., now one of the most profitable manufacturers of analog chips for cell phones and personal computers. He was able to generate record revenue in 1999 of $195 million, up 39% from 1998. Micrel has posted a profit every year for the last 21 years despite industry downturns.

Work ethic: As a child in a farming community, Zinn learned to take responsibility early. At age 4, he had to lug home heavy bottles of milk. At 14, he was milking cows before and after school and baling hay and had to get a driver’s license so that he could chauffeur his 10 younger brothers and sisters in a pickup.

Today, he relies on those lessons in labor to keep his company in top shape. "If somebody asks me how ‘success’ is spelled, I tell them it’s spelled ‘W-O-R-K,’ " Zinn said.
