Microsoft accounting losses is subject to outside losses not the day to day operations. Its difficult to explain the procedure for non operational losses but Corel shares decreases are considered "traffic loses" which to put it plainly parental losses due to outside investments(tax losses). Its somewhat the same as investors selling their losing value stocks to offset the gains from other holdings.Since MSFT have not sold any Corel shares(I think)their next quarterly report will not show a capital loss due to Corel's share amount. In fact they could increase their holdings with no limits because of Corel value drop. They are not restricted to the percentage of available shares outstanding incase someone wants to make a monopolistic argument about MSFT movement into a Linux platform. If MSFT decided to buy more Corel shares it has no voting value so Corel is safe from any hostile take-over.Unless investors with voting shares think otherwise.
