Fernando,

"If Alpha has such architectural advantages how come even DEC has
recognized that the Pentium Pro and Pentium II match it in integer
operations?"

Alpha is way ahead in both Integer and Floating Point. Here are some
figures.

Alpha 21164 Pentium II (266) Alpha improvement
20 10 2 times faster
29 8 3.6 times faster

And Q4 with 21264 and Pentium II (Deschutes 350 Mhz)

44 14 3.1 times faster
66 11 6 times faster

These differences are so pronounced that they make the Pentium
II look like a stinking pile of manure.

The Merced architecture better allow for at least a 500% improvement
over the x86. In fact to be clearly better than DEC alpha Intel
will need a 1000% increase. And NOT a 1000% increase compared to
the Pentium II today....But a 1000% increase over the 600 Mhz Pentium
II that they will be producing in 1999. Then they will have clearly
regained the lead. Maybe Merced will be this good.

If the future is Windows 95 and Visual Basic/C++ then Intel has
nothing to worry about.

However if the Future is Windows NT and Java......Then Intel better
make sure the Merced is at least as good as the Alpha and probably
better. Otherwise the Alpha will be a very viable MPU in 1999.

David Taylor
