I would be very grateful for any educated guesses as to P/E for the combined JDSU/SDLI. What with the combination, the Goodwill accounting changes, and the synergies, I am totally at sea.

For those very reasons I look at price to sales and compare to others in the sector:

JDSU --- 15.64
SDLI --- 28.40
GLW – 6.22
NUFO – 12.78
AVNX – 27.24
NEWP – 10.18
NT – 3.05
ALA – 1.95

None of the above is apples-to-apples since no one has the breadth of products as SDLI/JDSU. In addition, the large vendors like NT and ALA don’t focus entirely on components.

Compare price to sales of a couple other techs:

JNPR -- 80.85
SCMR -- 23.74
AMCC -- 60.19
PMCS -- 21.60
BRCM -- 20.38

The next step, of course, is to look at their estimated growth rates and see if you're willing to pay a premium.

JDSU's is estimated at 119% for 2001 and SDLI's at 93.5%.
