Some highlights from the Commercialization of Microsystems Conference in Santa Fe, NM...

Sandia announced the first commercial spinoff from its MEMS research -- MEMX. It will initially focus on micromirror technology.

Start-up Transparent Optical Inc. gave a presentation. The company has former Sandia exec James Smith.

Cronos CEO Robert Bratter outlined projections for the industry. He said the industry will shift to applications-driven from technology-driven. The market is projected to be $8 billion in 2004, with the largest growth coming in IT (58%), Telecom (21%) and Transportation (10%).
